Slice of Life Sunday: Two Eggs!

I found a second egg in the nest this week. With all this cold weather we've had this past week, I hope they are okay!

I've gotten a few questions about where the nest is, so maybe this will help. That's my front door on the left and if you look really close you'll see Mama Bird peeking through the plant. (Look in the center).

Kim and Nick's Wedding Album Design

Kim made two requests when I asked her what she wanted in her wedding album. 1. She did not want the "typical" wedding album that was stuffy and boring with a high likelihood that it would never come out for viewing. And 2. She wanted it to incorporate the design elements from the custom wedding logo and invitations I designed for their wedding. I've been working away at it all this week and thought I'd share some of the spreads I've designed. The photos used in the album are from the professional photographer's CD she purchased as part of her wedding coverage, so for now I will post thumbnails using the grey placeholder boxes as to not infringe on copyright.

So how did I accommodate Kim's 2 requests? For starters, I chose a very modern and less conventional vendor to produce the album. This particular album has a full custom photo cover that wraps around. I designed the cover to incorporate Kim's favorite portrait from the wedding, as well as the custom wedding monogram I designed. On the back I added the design elements from the invitation including the recycled paper used for both the invitations and programs. Serendipity was nice enough to send me a hi-res logo to use.

This is the opening spread. There will be a full photo of the ceremony on the left and the invitation on the right.

This will be a series of "getting ready" photos. Throughout the album, I incorporated the green from the graphics and also the flower from the invitations.

A spread of formal portraits with family and the wedding party.

This one is one of my favorites. I chose two stunning black and white photos from the ceremony and kept the layout minimal to highlight the sweetness of each.

Of course I designed a few "just photo" spreads without any additional designs. I wanted to keep the whole album simple, mainly focusing on the photos, and I wanted to give it a fresh appearance to let the photos stand out as they should. I used a lot of white space and borders to achieve this.

I just can't wait to see the finished product! I'm going to place the order this week and hopefully have it in hand in a few weeks.

Slice of Life Sunday: Birds of a feather

This is a longer Slice of Life post than usual because I'm so excited about it.....

I first noticed something was up last week when I discovered large chunks of my hanging begonia at my doorstep, right below the hanging basket. This annoyed me immensely because I've save that plant from death on many occasions and had become proud of its bushy, bright, and colorful appearance recently. Daily, I would look in between the leaves to see what might be in there, and found nothing. I picked up the fallen leaves and branches and went on with my day.

Then Friday as I opened my front door, a startled bird flew out of the hanging basket, squawking at me, and perched atop my patio fence, staring at me, then at the basket, then back at me. Again, I walked over to the basket and peered inside. Although this time I saw a bright white little egg in there, surrounded by the beginnings of a nest. Instantly I was excited that a new little family had moved into my patio. This particular hanging basket hangs right outside my door and each time I come in and out I've been very careful not to make too much noise. Last night I even laid out some things I thought Mama Bird might want to incorporate into her nest- dryer lint and ripped up rug strings courtesy of Barley.

Yesterday she didn't fly away when I opened the door, so stealthily I grabbed my camera and dared to snap a few photos. I think she's feeling safer now!

I took the egg pictures later in the afternoon when she had flown away.

Mason's three-month baby portraits

Mason's mama is another one of my friends named Kelly. Kelly and I worked side-by-side (literally) in a corporate marketing and event planning department before I left to pursue my latest job. She's fun, energetic, and I know people say this about other people a lot, but she really is one of the sweetest people I know. Seriously, I've never heard her say anything mean-spirited about anyone. She always knew how to draw me out of a funk at the office, and I was so honored when she asked me to photograph her son Mason's first portraits.

Thanks so much for your help at this session Kelly, you really brought out his personality!

Meet three-month-old Mason:

My reflection makes me this happy too:

As Kelly and I would say, L-O-V-E-I-T to the photo on the left. It says to me "Hey baby, wanna come hang in my crib?"

February desktop calendar wallpaper

Earlier this week, Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter and the dreary rain and cool temperatures Houston has been experiencing this week makes me long for brighter colors and warmer weather! This inspired me to post another photo from my trip to Australia last fall for this month's desktop wallpaper. Despite the rain we faced while on the east and west coasts, our time in the Northern Territory was graced with the most beautiful sunny skies and vibrant colors. I have this photo on my desktop at my office and a coworker asked me where I got such a cool desktop photo. I love when I get to say I took it!

May it inspire you too and get you through six more weeks of winter.
